After Coleman’s party we headed over to Nonnie and Poppy’s with the family crew to open gifts. There was no time to open them during the party. The Peck house was WAY to messy to allow guests, so off to Non & Pop’s we went!! We were very excited to have Gram, Grandpa, and Matthew join us too!
Shelby and Matthew helped open gifts and Coleman was very nice to welcome their participation.![]()

Uncle Luke collected the bags and even folded tissue paper to save!! Score!
After all the presents were opened, the Pilot Point Pecks had to head home, and the rest of us were hankerin’ for some bar-b-q and beer (or Mexican, or Italian, or, or…) In the end, bbq won. We went to a new (good!) little hole in the wall bbq place here in NRH/RH and ended up staying long to listen to some live old country/western music with a bit of dancing thrown in. Coleman did not-so-much dancing because he was enjoying all his new Nintendo 3DS games from his grandparents!
Shelby had some dude named Ricky asking her to dance every other song. He was a grown man. It was rather awkward, and something we didn’t really know how to deal with. I mean, it was safe because we were all right there, but was she uncomfortable? Finally we just told him that she was done dancing [with him.] Later she and I had a little talk about situations like that, and how she can always let mommy or daddy or another family member know if she’s uncomfortable, or if she doesn’t want to do something, or if strangers talk to her or bother her or whatever… Life lessons from the bbq joint.
She was much happier dancing with her uncles:
This sweet old couple, JR and Dottie, danced all night. They told us they were 88 (Dottie) and 94 (JR) and encouraged us to dance because “it keeps you in shape.” Yes it does, sir! They also had schooners of beer (see at their table on the left) so that was pretty awesome too. haha!
We headed home late. I think Coleman had a wonderful birthday full of family, friends, and more FAMILY!
The next morning was Sunday so we headed to church, and afterwards, decided on an old favorite for lunch, DON PABLO’S. (The restaurant where Daddy and I went to on our first date!)
We surprised Coleman by having them sing to him, and he was just a little embarrassed.
Ah, there’s the silly man.
and our HAPPY boy.
Daddy trying to look like a vaquero??
We were also “Parents of the Week” in Coleman’s class the week of his birthday. Daddy and I took off work to go show his classmates our family poster, and talk about what we do while they are in school.
Somehow, we Daddy ended up mainly talking about how stinky our dog Rusty is (which the kids loved, of course. Any potty or stinky talk is top on 4 and 5 yr olds’ list of favorite topics!) Coleman’s teachers said they know now that Coleman is his daddy’s son. During this presentation, Coleman “lead” the discussion. He liked being a leader and showing off our “beach-themed” poster.
Shelby had the idea to do an art project with some of the sand and shells from the beach this summer, so we went with it. As we were going through our pictures, we found a common theme: OUTSIDE! We realized one main sentence to sum up what our family likes to do is “We like to be outdoors!” We have pictures from camping, hiking, playing in the front yard, at Six Flags, at Rangers games, and at the beach.
The Children’s Center is a very healthy food initiative this year, so I knew I couldn’t bring in donuts or cupcakes as we have in the past. I searched on Pinterest quickly found this cute little snack craft to take for snack time. They made snowmen using marshmallows, grapes, apples, pretzel sticks, and mini chocolate chips.
Coleman is FIVE and you sure can tell! He has had a great 2 weeks since his birthday!! We are so proud of our little man!
